Q.
What does a session "look like"?

A.
Thespeech pathologist has all materials on a cart.  Speech isconducted “in the hallway” on chairs borrowed from a nearbyclassroom.  The speech pathologist reviews the previous sessionwith the child, selects a goal for the day, drills on the sounds withthe child, assigns a homework sheet, and the child returns to class.

Q.
How can I provide “5 minute therapy” when I service more than one building each week?

A.
Thedata collected on this program documents success when a child isscheduled only a few times per week. The number of sessions is based onthe student’s needs. If you are assigned to a building 2 days a week, the student could be serviced in the morning AND the afternoon, resulting in 16 sessions per month.

What if I have students with articulation AND language goals?

A.
TheIEP could be written as “X number of 30 minute sessions per week, AND Xnumber of 5-10 minute individual sessions per week” OR “X number of30-40 sessions per week”, with the language goals addressed in a groupsession, and the child staying afterwards to address articulation goals.

Q.
What do parents say about this program?

A.
Theparents in my school district LOVE this program and are pleased thattheir child only misses a few minutes out of the classroom. When Ienroll a new child into speech, the parents first concern seems to be:“What will my child be missing when they come to speech?” It iswonderful to answer that question with “They will not be missinganything!”

Q.
What do you say to parents at the IEP?

A.
“Westarted a new program a few years ago, and we have had wonderfulsuccess. Instead of Diane being scheduled for two, 30 minute groupsessions, I will be seeing her for 5-10 minutes individually severaltimes a week. Diane will have the opportunity to practice her soundsmore than she would in a group session. I will have her practice sayingher sounds on an average of 100 times in a 5 minute session. Also, allof my time is devoted to Diane, instead of having her waiting for herturn as I work with someone else. I have kept data on this program, andI am finding that I am dismissing children from speech approximately 4months sooner than traditional therapy.
